Independent Order of Odd Fellows Garment
This antique is part of a ceremonial wardrobe for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows—a secular, non-political society founded on friendship, love, and truth as seen in their 3 link chain symbol. A curious and endearing chapter of 19th century history.
A history of the Order's ethical precepts are "to visit the sick, help the afflicted, bury the dead, and bring up the orphans."
The sign of the order is three chain links, seen on this ceremonial garment, which symbolize the motto "friendship, love and truth," obliging the members to do charitable work and to think and act humanely and tolerantly.
They're an interesting piece of history, but can also be repurposed as home decor! Paula uses some of these herself to tie back the curtains of her home.
