Day 1
“I love New York, even though it isn't mine, the way something has to be, a tree or a street or a house, something, anyway, that belongs to me because I belong to it.”
New York is a living, breathing piece of art. As soon as one building crumbles, another is artfully restored, and you can't lift your head without spying something interesting—a brilliant shop window, a stoic statue, a particularly lovely cornice wrapped around a building.
Today brought us first to Jonathan Simkhai’s gorgeous store, where we studied his spring collection set elegantly against a cream background studded with simple vases of fresh-cut flowers. From there, we ventured to the cobblestoned paths of Bond Street for lunch at Il Buco where every dish is crafted in the traditions of Italy, but with an eye toward the future.
John Derian and I first met about twenty years ago, and his masterful pieces created using decoupage have had a place in our store since. It’s always a pleasure to cross paths, and I try to pop into his store any time I’m passing through the city.

Day 2
The Tin Building is a sprawling food emporium created by Chef Jean-Georges in honor of his absolute love and dedication to the city of New York. He wanted it to be a place of discovery, where cuisine could take on new meaning. The Tin Building itself is a restored historical landmark, having served as the backdrop to Fulton Fish Market for nearly 100 years.
Walking through its food-laden was not dissimilar to stepping through the markets of Provence, though the scope of food present is more global than regional. Our favorite part, however, turned out to be the Spoiled Parrot—a gorgeous confectionery where I selected a towering dragonfruit sorbet!
Finally, after a whirlwind of forgotten purses and mixed up timetables, we ended the night with Six on Broadway—a playful, award-winning production reimagining Henry the VIII’s six wives as a girl pop band akin to the Spice Girls. Yes, it’s as fun as it sounds.
Day 3
Our last stop brought us to the Nine Orchard Hotel, which was meticulously restored to its former Neo-Renaissance splendor over the last 10 years using blueprints and archival photographs from 1912. Although the historical appeal was enough to entice us inside, the true jewel is a special wallpaper created by our dear friends at Antoinette Poisson in collaboration with Gucci.
Pink-centered flowers are transposed over soft blue ribbons woven around squares of ivy, and ribbons of gold. Their own love of history shines through the design, walking the line of classic and modernity while adding a unique touch of art to the warm, open space.
The Corner Bar offered a final, delicious meal of oysters and sausages as we learned about the history of Canal Street, and admired the lofty ceilings. And then it was time, at last, to head home.
"New York has romanced me unlike anything else."
