Brand Spotlight | Bedlove

Delicately crafted and soft as spun clouds, Bedlove is a luxury line of linen bedding created by Laura Hubbard for those who crave old world romanticism with a distinctly modern twist. We will be hosting Bedlove in a Brand Residency at our Savannah store now through October 11th where we hope you’ll have the chance to meet Laura or feel the fabrics for yourself, but just in case you can’t make it, we’ve prepared a few questions for you!

Please read on to learn more about Bedlove’s unique design, indigo dyeing process, and more thanks to a conversation with the owner and her team!

Who is the craftsman behind Bedlove, and what does that design process look like?

Bedlove is designed by Laura Hubbard. She designed the linen with a distinctive turn-down detail to create a modern look inspired by the stories of the past. Each top sheet detailing continues one-third of the way down the edge of the sheet so when the sheet is turned down, the detail cascades off the top of the bed and down the side.

There are currently two styles available, the Double Ruffle and the Artisan Hemstitch in sun-drenched white and limited edition Indigo. Each piece is designed and manufactured with care. The Artisan Hemstitch bedding is hand-done by craftsmen who have completed at least eight years of apprenticeship, and the Double Ruffle detail is hand-gathered with a raw edge for extra softness. Additional Bespoke options, such as adding a ribbon detail, are available upon request!

I saw under a few of the listings that some were described as "Belgian linen." Can you tell us more about that?

Of course! All Bedlove linen bedding is crafted with Belgian linen, which is known for its softness and long-lasting capabilities. Our linen is stone washed to enhance the softness, and the more you wash your linens in the washer (yes, you can put them in the machine!), the softer they get. We like to call it “dream washing” because every wash evokes the sweetest dreams.

On a more technical note, the Belgian climate is ideal for flax and results in longer fibers, reducing the number of "connections" needed to craft the final linen cloth. Flax is unique compared to cotton because of its hollow fiber, which results in a textile that not only insulates during cooler months but cools during warmer months. It is truly the ideal fabric for Savannah weather!

How would you describe the design process for Bedlove?

The design process is years in the making! There have been countless iterations and prototypes to land on the final design you see here today. For example, Laura has experimented with various close options for the duvet covers from zippers to buttons to ties, and ultimately landed on the simple linen ties we feature on the current iteration. We found that ultimately, ties are the strongest option for long-term use and are also simple to use when making the bed.

As mentioned above, the Double Ruffle and Artisan Hemstitch were also designed and tested over several iterations. Laura found that the Double Ruffle in its current design is perfect for cuddling at night without being too warm!

How is the indigo dye accomplished? And why indigo above other colors?

Indigo is a fascinating dye to work with and one that is integral to the South where indigo factories were an important part of the economy. While the indigo manufacturing practices in the past are an extremely far cry from the ethical standards we hold today, the connection to the Low Country remains present even now. Bedlove indigo bedding is hand-dyed in individual batches at an all natural dye studio in Pennsylvania, Green Matters Dye Co.

Laura has personally visited and worked with the women who run Green Matters Natural Dye Co in PA, and has tested several other dye lots for future iterations of the Bedlove Linen Bedding. Bedlove offers the opportunity to design a bespoke bedding color for any of our customer's ideal bedding experience. Anyone interested in a Low Country Peach dye? We can do that!

How did the dream charms come about? And how would you decorate bedding with them?

Throughout time crystals have been used for their healing, calming, and regenerative properties. All of the Bedlove Dream Charm components, however, were designed by Laura Hubbard and then hand-crafted by a jeweler in Seattle, WA.

In our partnership with said jeweler, Bedlove created crystal Sleep Charms that can be attached to your pillow to aid in sleep, each of which is hand-selected for its known properties to calm, release stress, and support sleep.

Alongside these are the Dream Charms, crafted exclusively for Bedlove by a Seattle jeweler, which are made of Sterling Silver and come with Rose Quartz (to reduce stress), Prehnite (calming and nurturing the spirit) and Iolite (which calms the mind).

The magic and inspiration for Dream Charms came from the desire to add a little sparkle to the bedroom while tapping into the unique properties of the natural stones around us. While we can wear jewelry to bed and put healing stones under our pillows or our nightstands, these aren't always the most convenient or comfortable. By attaching a dream charm to your pillowcase, you're infusing your night sleep with the benefits of each stone without worrying about tangling or breaking jewelry, or the potential clutter of bedside crystals. Plus, they're pretty! And they add a unique glitter to the bedroom.

We recommend attaching them to the corner of your pillowcase, or if you'd rather, directly to your pajamas at night!
